Vietnam from Revolution to State Socialism is a six-session online course on the Vietnamese revolution and the formation of the socialist state that followed. From a comparative historical perspective, the course examines the revolution’s origins, development, and outcomes, placing Vietnam’s revolutionary socialism within both international and domestic contexts, including the Cold War, the Vietnam War, and the division of Vietnam between the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the Republic of Vietnam from 1954 to 1975. The Vietnamese Revolution of 1945—also known as the General Uprising of August (tổng khởi nghĩa tháng tám) or the August Revolution (cách mạng tháng tám)—was a decisive turning point in Vietnam’s political, social, and cultural history. It ended more than 80 years of French colonial rule, abolished the monarchy, and led to the proclamation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam’s independence on September 2, 1945. The revolution also marked the rise of Marxism and socialist ideology in Vietnam, laying the foundation for Communist Party leadership and later struggles against France and the United States for national reunification. In 1975, Vietnam was reunified under a socialist system that adopted socialism as the state ideology and institutionalized socialist principles. Studying revolutionary socialism in Vietnam is both theoretically and historically important. Theoretically, Vietnam offers a distinctive case of revolution and revolutionary socialism, providing rich material for conceptual and comparative analysis. Studying this history clarifies Vietnam’s political foundations and shows how socialist ideology was adopted and institutionalized. Historically, revolutionary and socialist experiences shaped much of modern Vietnam, and understanding their origins, development, and consequences is essential for studying Vietnam in the twenty-first century.
