War, Revolution, and State Socialism in Vietnam, 1945–1986 is a 12-session online course delivered over six weeks. It examines the Vietnamese Revolution of 1945, the construction of the socialist state in North Vietnam, and the postwar extension of the state-socialist model to reunified Vietnam after 1975. Using a comparative historical framework, the course traces the development and outcomes of the socialist state across international and domestic contexts, including the First Indochina War against French recolonization, the American War, and the division between the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) and the Republic of Vietnam (RVN) from 1954 to 1975. Studying revolutionary socialism in Vietnam is both theoretically and historically essential. Theoretically, Vietnam offers a distinct model of revolutionary socialism and rich empirical material for comparing state formation, party-state institutionalization, and wartime governance. Historically, revolutionary and socialist experiences decisively shaped modern Vietnamese society, politics, and institutions. Understanding these foundations is indispensable to analyzing contemporary Vietnam in the twenty-first century. The module emphasizes two central analytical approaches: socialist state formation under prolonged warfare and comparative socialist development. Rather than treating military strategy in isolation, it traces how sustained military mobilization shaped political, economic, cultural, and social institutions. It also examines the convergence and divergence of Vietnamese state-socialist models in relation to Soviet and Chinese models, including revolutionary legitimacy, the structural crises of high socialism, and the pressures that culminated in the 1986 Đổi Mới reforms. Designed for advanced undergraduates, early-stage graduate students, and professionals in area studies, governance, policy, or regional affairs, this course focuses on Vietnam and other post-socialist states.
